Special Programs

Choir Festival

Sunday, December 5 is the annual Salem Choir Festival conducted by the club at the First United Methodist Church of Salem. Many local church choirs and musical groups present music of the season. A free will offering is taken to benefit scholarship funds. The sanctuary is generally at capacity for this event.

Parade of American Music

With Parade of American Music now officially changed from February to November within the NFMC, Delyte DeYarmon has prepared a special program for us on Wednesday, November 17, 1999. As we approach the end of the 20th century, we'll be going through the decades of the century (with a couple of small jumps to keep to a reasonable amount of time for the evening). We'll meet American composers from different years, and we'll see how the music of their times reflected the times. We'll also try the Bring a Friend to Music Club theme for November with some special information about the NFMC.

NFMC Founder's Day & Orientation

During our meeting, we'll be sure to help our members know more about the Federation at all levels. During the program Brenda Bradley will lead a study of Poetry and Music. The poetry ranges from Mother goose and classics of Shakespeare and Dickinson to the current voice of Maya Angelou. The music also spans years from Thomas Morley and Franz Schubert to an original by our own John Mosher

Junior High Pre-Contest Recital

The April meeting of the Salem Music Study Club is part of the club's ongoing effort to help the youth in our community to develop musically. The program will be provided by students from the Salem Junior High School Band Program. They will play pieces which they are scheduled to play for their spring contests at our meeting on March 21, 2000. This offers many of them their first public solo or ensemble performance and helps them to prepare for their contests.

National Music Week

For National Music Week in 1999, the Salem Music Study Club changed its focus from presenting a musical program for the members of our community at large with the Kent/Salem Community Choir and by other individuals and groups from within our club and our community to taking our music out to several local nursing homes throughout the week. President Sally Bricker is once again planning to have our club members go out into the community with individual members presenting their specialties at nursing homes and another special location.

Summer Concerts in the Park

Wanda Navoyosky led a new project for the Salem Music Study Club, finding grant money to give a successful series of summer concerts for all ages at Waterworth Memorial Park's band shell. The club may be able to continue this.

This meeting of the Salem Music Study Club features a project that club members have supported in the past. For several years the Salem Music Study Club or the Salem Junior Music Study Club has offered this opportunity for the Junior High Band Students to get used to playing their solo or ensemble pieces for parents, families, friends (all of whom might not otherwise get a chance to hear a public performance of the pieces), and a knowledgeable audience before going to contest. Many students have commented about the benefits this has had for them once they get to the contests.

Programs will be available at the meeting
