Description of the Folk Service

The Folk Service was a weekly worship service on Wednesday evenings lasting for 45 minutes at the First United Methodist Church of Warren which used folk instruments rather than the organ to accompany the hymns, gospels, spirituals, and other traditional and contemporary music used in the service. The service also included a message from Pastor Becki Buckeye. The services were held in the informal setting of Gillmer Hall or in the Outdoor Chapel when weather permits.

The Order of Worship generally included an opening song, introductions/greeting/scripture/opening prayer, a song or song set, the pastor's scripture/message/prayer, special material (usually provided by special guests mentioned in the schedule such as folk musicians, Christian musicians, storytellers, or others with a special message to share), joys/concerns/prayer/Lord's prayer, another song or song set, closing/benediction, and a song as benediction response. Following the service, free concerts were given from 7:45-8:45 PM (or as close to that time as we could get moved and set up) at the Mocha House (a local coffee house with a great feel that is sometimes loud and smoky, but large enough with high ceilings that one can usually get away from the smoke) on most weeks by our special guests or by our regular musicians.

The musicians generally there for the weekly services included two or three guitarists and an acoustic bass guitar player with one of the guitarists often switching to other instruments such as autoharp, recorders, dulcimers, and more. All sang at times. Words (and sometimes music) were almost always available for the congregation to join in the singing. Songs they might not be familiar with were sometimes taught during the service. Special guests were asked to join the regular musicians for all songs during the service.

The special guests were generally invited to present a concert following the service. The artists were encouraged to choose from there own repertoires, and some of the concerts featured more music with a Christian theme, some were more secular, and some included a combination of material.

Many regular attendees of the Folk Service were members of the First United Methodist Church, but all were welcome to be involved. Television and newspaper ads and articles were used to help make the community aware of the Folk Service as a refreshing addition to or alternative to other worship services. In order to more effectively make members of the community aware of the Folk Service, we held the 7:45-8:45 PM concerts at the Mocha House as a service to the community and as a way to let more people know about the great guest artists at the Folk Service. Folks could get refreshments from the Mocha House. During the Lenten season, a simple soup supper was associated with the Folk Service; and before we associated with the Mocha House, members of the congregation provided and served a Decadent Dessert Bar following the service.

Traditional Sunday Worship

At First United Methodist Church of Warren

First United Methodist Church of Warren is also in business every Sunday morning with two services and a Sunday School hour in between them.

The main Sunday morning service is at 10:45 AM in the main sanctuary. This service under the dome with the beautiful old stained glass windows and appointments of the main sanctuary is a very traditional time of worship. The sound system in the sanctuary has recently been updated to ensure that everyone can comfortably hear the service. Sermons by the preacher, Bible readings by a liturgist, responsive readings with the congregation, times of prayer, communion at appropriate times of the year, hymns with the congregation, responses and an anthem by the choir, special music, and preludes and postludes with the organ and the piano are all parts of the service that let many people know they have been to church.

The first service at 8:30 AM is on a smaller scale under the brighter stained glass windows of Hyde Chapel (or in the Outdoor Chapel in the center of the church when weather permits). This service also uses sermons, readings, prayers, communion at appropriate times, hymns sung by the congregation, and organ or keyboard preludes and postludes. It is shorter and a little less formal than the 10:45 service, but still contains the traditional elements of Sunday morning worship.

The messages from the Reverend Becki Buckeye at any service are based on hier study of the Bible, and they confirm that the message of the Bible is alive and should be heard in today's world since it has direct relevance for all people. Pastor Buckeye understands that her own pastoral care and the church's concern for people in their times of need and in their times of joy are among the best ways for that message to be heard and to come into people's lives.

A Sunday school hour at 9:30 AM has classes appropriate for various ages during the school year.

At least one Sunday a month (usually the fourth Sunday), a catered dinner follows the 10:45 AM service.

Come be a part of these traditional Sunday morning worship events or of Bible studies and other events during the week.

From the west on State Route 5 or State Route 82 or the Ohio Turnpike Interchange 14, take SR 5/82 east to the West Market Street exit. Head east on West Market Street through Leavittsburg and into Warren for about three miles. After US 422 joins Market Street from the north, continue on 422 (Market) past the intersection of State Route 45 (Tod Avenue) where there is a traffic light and a BP station on the southeast corner and the Hot Dog Shoppe can be seen on the north side of the street. At the next traffic light, take the Y off to the left (northeast) to stay on Market Street and head toward downtown Warren (422 continues stright at that light becoming South Street). Proceed past Martin Chevrolet to the first traffic light. Turn left (north) at that light onto Mahoning Avenue (the street is called Main rather than Mahoning to the south). From Interstate 76, exit 57 or from exits of the Ohio Turnpike (Interstate 76) in Mahoning County (North Jackson) or the Ohio Turnpike (Interstate 80) in Trumbull County (Lordstown), follow the signs to State Route 45. Then turn north onto State Route 45 and follow the directions below for coming from the south on State Route 45.

From the south on State Route 45 (Tod Avenue), turn right onto West Market Street (US 422) where there is a traffic light and a BP station on the southeast corner and the Hot Dog Shoppe can be seen on the north side of the street. Turn left (north) at the first traffic light onto Park Avenue. The church is one block on the left.
